Financial Pages--Why read them?
Financial pages are pages that provide financial information.
Financial pages can be described as printed pages that give you news regarding
markets and companies. In addition they also give statistics and commentaries on
the financial performance of those companies. Financial pages are found in daily
newspapers, Sunday newspapers, magazines, newsletters, business magazines etc.
Most investors who invest in the equity markets read at least one or two of
these periodicals.
Since, good
judgment and access to the best information are essential for winning out with
investments, it is essential that one learns to read financial pages with ease. Those doing
the business at the stock exchange read financial pages to win.
Individual investors who invest directly by buying at the stock exchange or indirectly through a mutual fund, must have the same basic approach to the process in gathering financial information. The risks attached to direct investment are higher
as you need to study the financial pages in greater detail and rely on your own
judgment while investing. Indirect investments are comparatively less risky as
the mutual fund companies employ investment experts and advisers who make it
their business to study the market situations and advice them.
Long
term investors may get carried away with the idea that long term investment does
not require the study of financial pages. They may believe that all one needs to
do is identify a company that is doing well on the stock market; buy its shares
and wait for a fairly long period before selling. Actually this may be
detrimental to his interests. The investor needs to know more financial information about the
company he wants to buy into. It is a piece of investment like any other
investment. He must appreciate the future road map of growth of the company,
the market potential for the product etc before he buys a share in the company.
He should be able to understand the causes for the success and failure of a
company and the way in which the value of the share of the company is being
calculated. He will be able to get all this information and more by studying the
financial pages.
Diversification of portfolio is another aspect of investment that must be kept
in view by the long term or short term investor. Diversification of portfolio
implies that he invests his money in purchasing stocks and shares of different
kinds of industries. He does not put all his money into one basket. Each
sector has its own investment characteristics and stock performance histories.
Financial pages will help such an investor understand the dynamics of the sector
and invest wisely.
Financial pages will give you sufficient financial information on news, data, and
speculation and will provide you some amount of analysis. News will include
company news, business news, company results, news about world economy,
takeovers, mergers etc. Data would cover share prices, trading volumes, indices
and commodity prices. Financial analysis would focus upon market analysis, industry
analysis, company analysis and the impact of economic and fiscal policies of the
Government on different sectors. Speculations are just conjectures and the
investor will have to sift that grain from the chaff while reading financial pages and gathering financial information.
It
should be noted that financial pages provide financial information about companies which
are listed and traded on the stock exchange. They will be silent about
companies which are small or not traded frequently on the exchange. If one plans
to invest in companies of this kind, the best source of information would be
investment advisories or smaller magazines that deal with stock relating to
these companies. Financial information contained in financial pages alone may not suffice.
